Luke's gift

I have been so busy trying to get all my crafts done that I'm gifting for Christmas, that I haven't had a lot of time to post here. I know this post is not geared toward a file sale, but perhaps it will inspire creativity.

My sister-in-law mentioned that her son, Luke, could use a toybox and a child-sized table with chairs. She hoped they would be made out of wood. I searched high and low for something reasonably priced. Each piece reached as high as $200! After finding the unfinished furniture at JoAnn's, I set to work painting. Once painted, I applied some cut vinyl to personalize the pieces. (Incidentally, I've also committed to decorating Luke's bedroom with some vinyl cuts. I plan to use some of the files from the toybox.)

Below are the pictures I took of the furniture. I used the font "Tinker Toy" for the toybox and the font "Arial Black" for the table. The train and sailboat dies are not for sale as I adopted them from the Sizzix die.

Happy Birthday Mom and Liz

Tomorrow we celebrate the birthdays of my mom and my sister-in-law. My husband is going to deep-fry a turkey. Yummy!

I created a birthday card to make for the ladies. I used different two-sided paper for each card. I also used a birthday cake paper piecing to make the cards "pop." The front of the card is cut out like a window to show the inside of the card where the paper piecing is placed.

Chaotic Miscellany 2

To carry on with my calendar theme I created and cut the dies for the months of May through August. Since April showers bring May flowers, I chose to use a tulip and a tree for the month of May.

Chaotic Miscellany

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to feel the rush of the season. "So much to do, so little time." So, today's post is "killing two birds with one stone." (Maybe I should have titled this entry "Chaotic Cliches.")

As I mentioned in my last post, I often give photo calendars for Christmas gifts. I've started creating and cutting the files that I'm using for my calendars. So far, I have January through April done. For January, I made an icicle border and added the snowflake from my post on November 11th. I used the hot cocoa (from my post on November 20th) for February. For March, I used a caterpillar and a butterfly. Finally, for April, I used a baseball and the English D (a Detroit Tigers logo). (The English D is not for sale due to possible copyright infringement).

Gift Idea

One gift I've done for several years has been a photo calendar. In years past, I've printed the calendar pages with meaningful dates to the family (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). The only die cuts I used came from using an Ellison or Sizzix press. Now that I have my KNK, making the calendars look unique will be much easier.



I may just start by using the following file. Each of the months has a letter replaced with a die cut. Those dies could be enlarged and used elsewhere on the calendar. They could also be used for cards and scrapbook pages.

Good Eats

We often see a Thanksgiving table adorned with the cornucopia filled with fruits and vegetables. I created a cornucopia file for that reason. As I went to post it here, I wondered how it tied into Thanksgiving.

It turns out that the cornucopia is a goat's horn; particularily that of Zeus' nanny. Her horn broke off while playing with Zeus. When he restored the horn to her, he gave it magical powers to grant wishes. So, how did the cornucopia make it to the Thanksgiving table? I suppose it became a symbol of abundance. The pilgrims and Native Americans must have been very thankful for the abundance of food they harvested after teaching each other new farming methods.

A Bit of Warmth

Thanksgiving Traditions

Having lived in the Detroit suburbs all of my life, there hasn't been a Thanksgiving that has gone by we haven't watched the Detroit Lions play football. The opposing team changes from year to year, but the Green Bay Packers have been the other team on a number of occasions. In honor of Thanksgiving football, I've created a file to depict the game on tv. You could change the colors, names and numbers to fit your needs.

While creating the file for the pumpkin pie, I decided to whip out a cherry pie [file] too. By changing the red filling piece to a dark blue or purple, you instantly have blueberry pie. Change it to a nice golden yellow and dot it with a brown pen and you have cinnamon apple pie. It's a very versatile file. It looks yummy enough to eat!

Caleb's Favorite Things

My eldest son, Caleb, LOVES everything to do with trains, especially Thomas the train. I just completed a two-page layout of pictures of him playing with his trains and eating Cheerios (he lined the Cheerios up like a train). I found the title "One Track Mind" on a great site (http://www.theperfecttitle.com/) that I often use for title suggestions. I had already planned on putting a track on the page. I wanted to spruce up the title a bit though. So, after fiddling around a bit, I decided to put the words inside the freight cars. I think it turned out nicely.

When Caleb was younger, he was very attached to a stuffed kitty that was orange in color. He cuddled that kitty a lot and even slept with it. Because of that, there are lots of pictures of him with kitty. I created a kitty die cut to go on the page with those pictures. My inking skills need some work; and chalking would have probably been nicer than ink on the outline of the die too. The file cuts great though. :)
